Canine and Feline Adoption Program
Effective May 1, 2011
Canines and Felines received at the Yadkin County Animal
Shelter (the “Shelter”) shall receive heartworm (6 months or older) and parvo
(canines two years or younger ) testing as soon as deemed adoptable, but no
less than seventy-two (72) hours from initial intake at the Shelter. The policies below apply only to animals that
are deemed adoptable.
If the heartworm test is positive, the animal will be
available for adoption or rescue as soon as deemed adoptable. Anyone who adopts or fosters a heartworm
positive animal will be informed of such prior to release from the Shelter. All
animal support/rescue groups/and other interested parties, by request, shall be
notified by electronic mail (“e-mail”) of adoption/fostering opportunities from
a list to be maintained by Animal Shelter staff.
If the canine parvo test is positive, the canine will be
held at the Shelter up to five (5) days. Anyone who adopts or fosters a parvo
positive canine will be informed of such prior to release from the Shelter. All
animal support/rescue groups, by request, shall be notified by electronic mail
(“e-mail”) of fostering opportunities from a list to be maintained by Animal
Shelter staff.
In compliance with North Carolina General Statute §130A-192,
canines and felines shall be retained for claiming by the owner(s) for a
minimum of 72 hours. If the animals are deemed adoptable by the Yadkin County
Animal Shelter staff and age appropriate (four months), they will be spayed or
neutered and receive a rabies vaccination. The animals will be held in the care
of the veterinarian conducting the procedure for a minimum of twenty-four (24)
hours for recovery. If the animals are adoptable and not age appropriate for
spaying or neutering, they may be adopted and a spay/neuter/rabies voucher
issued when age appropriate.
When each animal is completely adoptable, all animal
support/rescue groups /and other interested parties will be contacted by e-mail
for adoption. Reduced rates shall be applied for qualified rescue groups that
are approved by the Animal Responsibility Committee. Qualified rescue groups
shall have documentation of 501(c)(3)status. Canines and felines adopted at
reduced rates to approved rescue groups shall receive rabies and distemper
vaccinations.
