5D - PL 566 Deep Creek Watershed Project |

 Over 50 years ago, several leaders of Yadkin County decided that flooding within the Deep Creek Watershed was a problem.
Therefore the Deep Creek Watershed Work Plan was approved for operations on January 31, 1958. The project is authorized through the Watershed Protection and Flood Protection Act-Public Law 83-566, as amended (16 U.S.C. 1001-1008). Project sponsors are the Yadkin Soil and Water Conservation District and the Yadkin County Board of Commissioners.
The work plan agreement was signed by the Federal Government, the Yadkin County Commissioners, and the Yadkin Soil and Water Conservation District to work in partnership to build 17 dams and complete 39.7 miles of clearing and snagging on North Deep and South Deep Creek.
To date, 14 flood water retarding structures have been completed and are functioning as designed.
Structure 5D is the last structural work of improvement planned for construction. It is a multiple purpose structure for flood prevention and municipal/industrial water supply.
The dam is estimated to have a normal pool of 135 acres, providing 6 million gallons of water a day for use. This is also based upon a severe 20-year drought reoccurrence interval. This point on south deep creek is approximately 16,000 acres in drainage, 25 square miles. The release gates will always release 4 cfs downstream as a minimum.
