Home Fire Escape Plan
- The first step in escaping a fire is to plan ahead.

- Install working smoke detectors on each level of your home, near the bedroom and inside bedrooms is you sleep with the door closed.
- Prepare a floor plan of your home showing at least two ways out of each room.
- Establish a meeting place outside. This ensures everyone is out of the house.
- Get out, Stay out. Never go back in a burning house.
- Check all windows and doors for easy operation. If you are considering security bars on your windows, use the type with a quick release lever.
- Consider window escape ladders if the bedrooms are on the 2nd story. These are available at many home improvement and hardware stores.
- Include provisions for infants, children, the elderly and disabled.
- Know you local Emergency Number

Once a home fire escape plan has been developed, each family member should practice in a drill. You should practice your home fire escape plan at least twice a year.
- Have everyone go to their bedroom and close the door.
- Someone sounds the alarm
- Crawl low under smoke to the door
- Test door with back of hand to see if its hot. If so, do not open. Go to alternate route
- Go to meeting place outside
- One person calls the emergency number.
