In late August, the Yadkin County Health Department was notified of pertussis in a 5 month old infant in Yadkin County.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Servicesreported August 20, 2012 the first infant death attrituable to pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough. The child, who was only two months also, was from Forsyth County.

Overview
Yadkin County's local public Health Department is a small, rural health department providing services for over 38,000 Yadkin County residents.

Public Health
Public health is described as the science of protecting and improving the health of communities through education, the promotion of healthy lifestyles, and research for disease and injury prevention. Overall, public health is concerned about protecting the health of the entire population. 

Mission
The primary goal of the Yadkin County Health Department is to protect and improve the health of the citizens of Yadkin County. This is accomplished through the maintenance of a healthy environment, education of the people, and the enforcement of state rules and regulations.
The Yadkin County Health Department develops partnerships, policies and programs to assure preventative health services are avaliable to infants, youths, adolescents, young adults, adults and senior citizens regardless of race, color, nationality or ability to pay.

Responsibilities
The Yadkin County Health Department employs and contracts with professionals to prevent health problems from happening or reoccurring through the:

• Administration of services
• Development of policies
• Implementation of educational programs

The Yadkin County Health Department focuses on quality health care services, equity, and accessibility.
